My love for rats has always been a constant, no matter the size, shape, or color. My pet menagerie started with one at the age of 5, a sweet black hooded female named Rabbit, and the obsession has since taken off. When my pet-only crew had grown to eight extremely rotten rats, I knew I was in trouble. Co-workers and aquaintances found my pets repulsive, and it was my goal to educate them on just how neat a rat is. Luckily, I was around the right people. I began learning as much as I can, and I still am, about rat behavior, genetics, and breeding. I wanted to breed healthy, well-adjusted rats that everyone would enjoy. Thusly, Ratterfly was born.
Rats are very special pets, with amazing personalities and an incredible learning ability. I think any rat lover can tell you that their furry companions have an uncanny way of frustrating you endlessly by their tireless mischeviousness, while simutaneously delighting you. The ratties I breed are bred first and foremost for health and quality temperament, secondly for appearance. Despite what other breeders may say, (which is extremely unprofessional to begin with); I do not sell snake food, pedigreed or otherwise. I screen adopters, and I keep my adoption prices low. I always have what's best for my rats in mind, and I am more than willing to go out of my way to make my ratties happy, both with myself and with any potential adopter. I do not participate in clubs, nor do I attend shows. I find this not only endangers my rats health (and I do not have the time - or space - to properly quarantine before and after each show!), but it puts far too much on my plate to give the proper care to each and every one of my residents. Some breeders require a club membership and competitive history to even consider you as an equal. I firmly believe how you act and treat your pets is how you should be judged. That being said...
If my rittens do not find homes; they stay with me! I do not cull!
Each and every ritten and rat is handled and tracked daily for health and temperament, and extensive pedigrees are kept. New owners' information will be recorded and kept so that I'm aware of where my babies are going as well as a way to contact adopters so that I may be kept up to date (and in turn keep them up to date) with any health or temperament issues that may arise. You will always be kept in the loop and I encourage anyone, having adopted from me or not, to contact me for information or with questions. I'm always happy to help. Whatever you're looking for, I think you'll agree; my lovey, squishy babies will make you coo!
